Police commissionerate for suburbs

A police commissionerate will be set up for the suburbs given the huge population increase and consequent policing needs, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced in the Assembly on Monday.

Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for the Police department, Mr. Karunanidhi said that more than 1.2 crore people lived in the area under the present Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate. Apart from the increase in population and vehicles, many industries had to set shop in the suburbs.

Mr. Karunanidhi said Mumbai city had a commissionerate and there were two such set-ups to cater to its suburbs. In Hyderabad, there was one each for the city and the suburbs.
